Manchester City supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side edge past Bristol City 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night to take a step closer to the Carabao Cup final.
Pep Guardiola has repeatedly fended off suggestions that his side can win the quadruple this season, but given they have one hand on the Premier League title, a decent looking last 16 Champions League tie, and progression in both domestic cup competitions, it’s very much on. And the Citizens moved to within 90 minutes of the Carabao Cup final on Tuesday night as goals from Kevin De Bruyne and Sergio Aguero saw off spirited Bristol City, giving Guardiola’s side a slender advantage heading into next week’s second leg.
Thus, there have been many delighted Citizens in the Tavern in recent times, although they are unlikely to be overly thrilled by recent comments from manager Guardiola ahead of Sunday’s potentially tough encounter at Liverpool, regarding the fitness of defender Vincent Kompany.
The 31-year-old hasn’t featured for the Premier League leaders since coming off injured in their 1-0 victory over Newcastle United back on December 27, although Guardiola was optimistic at the time that the Belgium international would be back for future fixtures.
However, the Spaniard said today in his pre-Liverpool press conference (via the club’s official Twitter account) that the centre-back will likely miss Sunday’s trip to Anfield, saying: ‘I think Vincent Kompany is not ready for Liverpool, but the others are doing quite well.’

And these comments are sure to strike a blow in Guardiola’s plans ahead of Sunday’s encounter, a game many feel could ask the toughest questions yet of Man City’s incredible unbeaten Premier League run.
Landlord’s verdict: Vincent Kompany’s injury troubles have been well documented in the last few years, with the 31-year-old failing to register in excess of 30 Premier League appearances in each of the last five seasons.
And Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed in his pre-Liverpool press conference that the defender is ‘not ready’ for their trip to Anfield on Sunday, despite seeming optimistic about the centre-back when the injury occurred against Newcastle over a fortnight ago.
Thus, questions will again be asked about Kompany’s injury record, a record which could well force Guardiola into the transfer market in the coming weeks.
