Blow for Liverpool as quality midfield target opens negotiations with European giant

Dries MertensLiverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping for an exciting summer under Jurgen Klopp but their hopes of signing a quality midfielder have taken a massive dip today.

The Express, citing reports from TuttoMercatoWebindicates that Belgian international Dries Mertens has opened negotiations with Napoli regarding a contract extension.

Mertens has managed just four Serie A starts this season and was expected to be on Jurgen Klopp’s summer shopping list after originally being linked with a move to Anfield back in the mid-season transfer window.

However Mertens, who’s current contract expires in 2018, looks set to stay with Napoli, which isn’t too surprising considering the recent comments he made to Belgian outlet

“I think that the coach and the staff still consider me to be an important part of the team. It’s a privilege to play for a club where [Diego] Maradona is a fan even if I don’t know him personally.”

With Liverpool looking for the sort of recruits that can bolster their push for Champions League football next season, our landlord feels that missing out on this experienced ace could be decisive.

Liverpool fans, who should you pursue if this target rules out a move? Let us know in the comments below!
