The Liverpool fans in the Football Transfer Tavern are buzzing for this Saturday’s season opener against Southampton but they may be forced to complete the game without one of their main transfer targets.
That is because according to talkSPORT, long-term Reds target Xherdan Shaqiri has confirmed that he expects to remain in Germany this season, handing a major blow to Brendan Rodgers’ plans.
The 22-year-old Switzerland international was strongly linked with a move to Anfield this summer after an impressive World Cup campaign.
That form also saw him linked to a number of European clubs including Italian giants Roma and Juventus who were keen to bring him to Turin.
But it had been thought that Brendan Rodgers would use the money raised by the Luis Suarez sale to bring Shaqiri to Anfield this summer.
However the Bayern Munich winger has confirmed that he expects to stay in the Bundesliga this season.
“I am a player of Bayern Munich as I am under contract with the club. Basically, I believe I will be staying on at Bayern Munich,” Shaqiri told Bild.
“But as long as the transfer window is open, anything could happen in the very end.”
