Blow for Tottenham: Pochettino’s latest comments give fans real cause for concern

The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern are feeling rather confident ahead of the return of the Premier League this weekend. The Lilywhites in the pub are still celebrating their side’s victory over Dortmund on Tuesday, with rampant celebrations expected to continue for a while yet.

However, owing to some news filtering into the pub, the mood is beginning to subdue somewhat. Indeed, a few recent comments from Mauricio Pochettino regarding their side’s fitness concerns have posed quite the dilemma for the fans in the pub. According to Pochettino, the duo of Toby Alderweireld and Victor Wanyama are not expected back for a while yet, which whilst not unexpected, is a blow for the Lilywhites.

Perhaps more worrying, though, is that neither player has a return date set. As per Ben Dinnery on Twitter, Pochettino has revealed that he ‘hopes’ that Victor Wanyama will be back before the end of the year, but he is unable to confirm that, whilst Alderweireld’s return date is still uncertain too.

It’s one thing having injury problems, but not having a definitive timeline for proceedings effects planning and preparation, and given how hectic the new year period often is, that’s certainly reason for concern at Tottenham.

They’ve got options of course, but it’s quite difficult to replace two players that are constant starters when available. The longer they’re out, and the longer that Pochettino is unaware when they will return, the more problems Spurs will have.

Landlord’s Verdict

Tottenham have coped well without the star duo, but if anyone else gets injured in their positions over the next few weeks, Pochettino could have a bit of a problem.

They aren’t a squad that is blessed with depth, and with so many games coming up and still no idea of when they will return, it’s going to be tough for Pochettino to navigate these choppy seas.
