The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are placing a lot of significance on this evening’s clash between their side and Chelsea. Arsenal’s Premier League campaign has hit the buffers, whilst they’re already out of the FA Cup. Therefore, other than the Europa League, the Carabao Cup represents Arsenal’s only realistic chance of silverware. However, in order to secure that, they’ll need to beat Chelsea over two legs – with the first set to take place this evening.
Unfortunately, though, their preparation for the game has been far from ideal, with the Gunners suffering a number of injury problems. Perhaps the most significant of these, according to the Mirror, could be Mesut Ozil. The Mirror are reporting that Ozil looks set to miss the game having suffered a knee injury – and he has apparently not trained this week as a result.
His absence will no doubt come as a huge blow to Arsene Wenger, given just how good the German has been in recent weeks. After stumbling earlier in the season, Ozil has really turned his form around over the last month or two, and his consistency has been a big reason why Arsenal have been able to stay in the mix amongst the top six in the Premier League.
Particularly against Chelsea, who are a tough side to break down, his expert passing will have, ideally, featured heavily within Arsene Wenger’s gameplan – but now it appears as though the Frenchman will have to consider other options.
It is yet to be confirmed, of course, but given his lack of training, a role looks very unlikely.
Ozil was arguably Arsenal’s best player when Chelsea and Arsenal last faced off last week, and so his absence will be a boost for the Blues.
He’s able to find space in an incredibly clustered midfield, and with Chelsea likely to pack out the decks at Stamford Bridge, Arsenal may struggle to break them down as a result.
Time for Wenger to have a re-think.
