Well I hadn’t heard much of him, that is, until this week when the dream move from Madrid to Bolton was mooted. Indeed, the young Real Madrid full-back is currently being linked with a transfer to the Trotters, though they face competition from Benfica.
Born in Madrid, Alonso has been at the club throughout his career, progressing through the youth system before reaching the Real Madrid Castilla (the Real Madrid B team). He’s found it difficult to break into the first-team – making only one substitute appearance – and so, with Real again likely to embark on targeting expensive external targets, Alonso may well be forced to move on to find first-team football. Regarded as one of the more promising players to come out of the Blanco youth system in recent years, he would be a useful and versatile acquisition; able to play left full-back or a slightly more offensive wing-back role.
Benfica are known to be keen; reportedly requesting his inclusion as part of a player-plus-cash deal if Real Madrid proceed in targeting their Argentine winger Angel Di Maria. However, Bolton are thought to have a lined-up a £2.5million bid, and it wouldn’t be the first time a player has swapped the Bernabéu for Bolton (i.e. that shaggy heard sex-bomb Ivan Campo).
A loan deal could be another option if Madrid don’t wish to completely cut loose a home-grown youth, whose career is still burgeoning and could form part of their future. Nevertheless, whether Owen Coyle is successful in his bid is likely to depend on other Benfica-based variables.
So, we all look forward to seeing our old pal Marky Al, the Magnificent M, the big A, soon yeah?
