Both Crystal Palace and Southampton fans were drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern over the weekend following defeats in the Premier League.
Roy Hodgson’s Eagles remain without a point or a goal after going down 5-0 at Manchester City, leaving them firmly rooted to the bottom of the division and already in a massive fight to avoid the drop come May.
The Saints also lost at the weekend, having been edged out 1-0 by Manchester United at St Mary’s, but with two wins and two draws from their opening six matches, they again look destined for a season in mid-table.
Despite disappointment for both sets of supporters on Saturday, there may be some good news for them today if a recent report from talkSPORT is anything to go by, which outlines that Barcelona forward Paco Alcacer, a reported target for the Premier League duo over the summer, is looking to leave the club.
The 24-year-old only moved to the Nou Camp last year following a long association with Valencia, yet managed just 20 La Liga appearances for the Catalans last term, in which time he bagged six goals.
And with just two league appearances in their opening six matches of this season as well, it’s clear that the Spain international is struggling to dispose the likes of Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez from Ernesto Valverde’s starting eleven, and reports suggest that he is looking to quit the club for more regular football.
And with both Palace and Southampton reportedly interested in Alcacer during the summer, this is likely to come as a huge boost as they plan for reinforcements in the January window.
Landlord’s verdict: Both Crystal Palace and Southampton have struggled in front of goal this season – the Eagles have yet to net in the Premier League, while the Saints have bagged in just two of their six league games.
So news that reported summer target Paco Alcacer wants out of Barcelona is sure to delight the two club’s respective hierarchies ahead of the January window, with Palace in particular in need of something special having lost all six games thus far.
The 24-year-old showed glimpses of brilliance last term in bagging six goals for the Catalans, but he’s not going to dethrone the likes of Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez anytime soon, and thus may be better off moving on in a bid to fulfil his potential.
And Selhurst Park or St Mary’s could be the ideal place for Alcacer to kickstart his career once again.
