Boost for Newcastle United with forgotten man able to play against Watford

Newcastle United fans here in the Tavern will be desperate to see their side finish the season strongly, having struggled for consistency in recent times.

The Magpies will be desperate to return to winning ways later on today after suffering two successive defeats, as they will travel to Vicarage Road to face a Watford side that are on a slump of their own. And, many of our local residents received some promising news prior to kick-off, as according to BBC Sport’s pre-match team news, Mikel Merino has resumed training and could play, while Islam Slimani begins a three-match ban.

Mikel Merino has been linked with a move away from St James’ Park for some time now, but manager Rafa Benitez will be desperate to keep hold of his talents in the summer transfer window. And, it looks as if the 58-year-old may get to see him back in his side later on today, as the central midfielder has resumed training following a back injury and could play.

On the other hand, the Magpies will be without Islam Slimani for the rest of the current campaign, as the Algerian begins a three-match ban for violent conduct after an off-the-ball incident against West Bromwich Albion.

Landlord’s Verdict:

Mikel Merino hasn’t had the desired effect that many fans would have hoped for in the current campaign, but supporters will be pleased to see him back in action if he can make the squad later on today. Although, with Islam Slimani now out for the remainder of the current campaign, it looks as if he won’t be returning to Tyneside anytime soon.
