Boost for Southampton fans as welcome reports emerge

Southampton fans have been relatively quiet in the Transfer Tavern during the international break following their side’s sluggish start to the season.

The South Coast outfit have managed just two wins from their opening seven Premier League games and thus sit 12th in the table, with last season’s goal-scoring problems once again rearing its head in the early phase of the campaign.

New boss Mauricio Pellegrino will be hoping his side bounce back from their recent 2-1 defeat at Stoke with victory over Newcastle United on Sunday, yet there may be some good news for our resident Saints supporters if a recent report from Football Insider is anything to go by.

And that’s because they report that Southampton, alongside Burnley and Nottingham Forest, are keeping tabs on Chesterfield starlet Dylan Hand.

The 17-year-old defender only moved to the Proact Stadium last summer following time at Irish outfit Dundalk, but has yet to make a first team appearance for the Spireites, instead he’s been restricted to appearances for the club’s various youth teams.

Nonetheless, he is reportedly impressing the staff at Chesterfield and as such several sides higher up the Football League pyramid are also keeping tabs, with Burnley, Forest, and Southampton reportedly interested in the youngster.

And with the Saints’ recent history of producing excellent young players, Hand may well find the lure of St Mary’s too great to turn down should they make a move in the coming transfer windows.

Landlord’s verdict: They appear to be doing something right at Southampton, what with several players coming up through the youth system and going on to achieve bigger and better things.

The likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Luke Shaw, and Theo Walcott, amongst others, have all signed for some of the biggest clubs in England following impressive stints at St Mary’s, so news that the South Coast outfit are interested in Chesterfield’s Dylan Hand is sure to intrigue the defender.

The 17-year-old hasn’t featured for the League One side yet but is very highly-rated at the Proact Stadium, and the chance to make the step up to the Premier League, with a side possessing a fine track record of promoting youngsters, may be too much to reject.
