According to The Sun, Newcastle are interested in signing Porto midfielder Yacine Brahimi.

The Algeria international has been in scintillating form for the Portuguese outfit so far this season, helping the club to top of the Primeira Liga. However, his contract is due to run out at the end of the season.

This means that The Magpies will be able to sign the 28-year-old for free in the summer, or for a relatively cheap price in January. Given the club's proclivity to not spend a lot in the transfer market, this could suit them down to the ground.

However, it is not just the player's price that makes him such an alluring figure for Newcastle, he also is the player that the club so desperately need. Currently, under Rafa Benítez, Newcastle have a very strong defence, but it is their attack that has let them down so far this season.

The addition of Brahimi would give the club the creative spark that they have so obviously been lacking so far this season. This could make them a serious force next season, or could well take their game to the next level should he join this season, and he may be the key to unlocking Salomón Rondón's potential at the club.

The Magpies are now on a two-match winning streak after waiting almost three months for their first win of the season. Their fortunes look to be changing now, and they may be building some momentum. Brahimi will only help Benítez build on the team's growing confidence.
