The Toon Army were beaten 3-1 at West Brom on Saturday and were battred 5-1 by Bolton two weeks ago. The Newcastle board have seeminlgy decided this is not good enough despite holding league champions Chelsea to a 1-1 draw last week.
This has come as quite a shock given Hughton successfuly guided Newcastle back into the Premier League following their relegation in the 2009-10 campaign.
Toon fans had been impressed with their team’s overall performance this season which despite a recent promotion has left them 11th in the top flight, with five wins from 16 games – though, only two of those have come at home.
This will lay further questions at the door of club chairman Mike Ashley, whose previous managerial decisions upset fans and have been blamed for the Tyneside club’s fall from grace.
A statement on the club website said:
“the board would like to place on record their thanks to Chris for his considerable efforts during the club’s transition from Championship to Premier League club.
“Chris has shown exceptional character and commitment since being appointed manager in October 2009. The club wishes him well in the future.
“Regrettably the board now feels that an individual with more managerial experience is needed to take the club forward.
“The task of appointing a new manager now begins. An announcement will be made shortly regarding transitional arrangements pending the appointment of a successor.”
So who do you think will get the vacant post? Many managers may weary of taking up the position given the high pressure it brings and the Toon Army may have a struggle to fill the post before January.
Expect Newcastle fans to be singing for Kevin Keegan to return by next week.
