Brighton’s record-breaking transfer decision could be their smartest yet

The Brighton and Hove Albion fans in the Transfer Tavern are extremely excited about their latest transfer rumour. According to widespread reports, Jurgen Locadia is on the verge of completing a move from PSV Eindhoven to Brighton this January to bolster their attack.

While he is unproven at this level, the 24-year-old could be a masterstroke of a signing. With nine goals in 15 Eredivisie games this season for PSV and a total of 62 strikes in 176 games for the Dutch giants, Locadia is a top talent who needs to move abroad.

Buying from the Eredivisie can be a lottery. You could get someone like Dennis Bergkamp, Ruud Van Nistelrooy, Robin Van Persie or Luis Suarez, who have all arrived from the Dutch top division and revolutionised the Premier League. But equally, you could get someone like Vincent Janssen or Ricky Van Wolfswinkel. It really can go one of two ways but it is worth a gamble for Brighton considering the domestic options.

Locadia has reportedly cost about £14m, which is less than West Ham are demanding for third choice striker Diafra Sakho. And West Ham were also after £20m for Andy Carroll. The domestic market is inflated so Chris Hughton is wisely spending his pennies on foreign imports.

Brighton’s attack is far from spectacular. Players like Glenn Murray, Tomer Hemed and Sam Baldock are all likely to chip in with a few goals but there is no maverick forward who can really win a game on his own or score a number of goals in the season. That could be something that Locadia adds to this Brighton squad if he comes off.

The former Netherlands under-21 star can fulfil his ambitions to play for the senior national squad if he performs well in the Premier League and he offers Brighton some Champions League experience too.
