Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are arguing just what on earth their club was thinking last summer but it seems an escape route will be handed to one flop.
ESPN quote Werder Bremen sporting director Frank Baumann as confirming Chelsea defender Papy Djilobodji is a target for the club, who are eying replacements for Jannik Vestergaard; who joined Borussia Monchengladbach in a deal reported to be worth around £9m.
Djilobodji was a shock signing for Chelsea last summer, after the Blues failed to land John Stones from Everton, and played just one-minute for the Blues before being loaned to Werder Bremen during the January transfer window.
He impressed in the Bundesliga, making 16 appearances in all competitions, and became a cult-hero after his dramatic 88th minute winner on the final day against Eintract Frankfurt sealed the club’s survival from relegation.
Although stating nothing is concrete yet, Baumann confirmed his side are interested in a permanent deal for the 27-year-old.
“He’s still on our map, and we are looking into it, but there is nothing concrete yet.”
