Arsenal fans have become used to scrapping for a European spot in recent seasons, with a place in the Champions League appearing to be the biggest prize for boss Arsene Wenger on an annual basis.
However fans here in The Transfer Tavern was devastated when the Frenchman’s men failed to secure an appearance at the pinnacle of the European game last year, settling for a place in the Europa League instead. Disappointing to all involved at the club, a repeat of such a failure will not be accepted again by the experienced French manager. Our resident Gooners have accepted the fact that their side are likely to lose both Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil in the summer, with the leading pair’s contracts set to expire in the summer.
Over a cold pint in the booths by the toilet, our landlord sat down to chat with fans about who they wished to see Wenger sign to replace the pair, with a number of top-class options touted as potential targets in the summer. However one man pipped that he would like to see a less established star given a chance at The Emirates, with Bayer Leverkusen’s Kevin Volland the touted name.
Arsenal have enjoyed great success in bringing Germans to the Premier League, and the 25-year-old has all the attributes required to succeed at this level. Volland impressed during spells with 1860 Munich and Hoffenheim before earning a move to Leverkusen, where his excellent form has continued. Fifteen goals in less than forty league appearances since his 2016 arrival is a sublime record for a winger, and one that Wenger will be fully aware of.
Pacy, direct, and with a fierce shot, Volland could become a star in North London, and Wenger should certainly consider giving the player a chance this month.
Arsenal fans, could Volland fill the void? Let us know!
