Flashback: Burnley’s move for Matej Vydra hasn’t aged well

In our latest instalment of the Flashback series, we take a look back at a certain moment and look at how things might have changed those initial reactions.

For all of the positives Burnley can take for their unique approach to the Premier League, documented by Reuters back in May for their reliance on British talent in a 4-4-2 system, you’d be forgiven for questioning some of their decisions regarding recruitment in recent seasons.

Defender Ben Gibson – who joined the Clarets from Middlesbrough for £15m last summer – has made just six appearances for the club, while striker Matej Vydra, purchased for a reported £10.98m (per Transfermarkt) from Derby County in 2018 has also struggled to find his feet at Turf Moor.

The Czech Republic front man finished as the Championship’s top goalscorer in 2017-18, scoring 21 league goals for the Rams. He subsequently earned himself a move to the top-flight with Burnley last summer because of that memorable campaign, but things haven’t exactly gone as planned for the 27-year-old in Lancashire.

Vydra’s move to Turf Moor was greeted with great optimism (as you can see below) from sections of supporters who had tracked his performances for Derby the season before, though after a disappointing campaign last term – which saw the former Watford marksman score just one goal in 13 appearances – his future at the club now looks bleak.

Vydra has been limited to just one solitary performance in the EFL Cup so far this term, and with the in-form Ashley Barnes up front in Sean Dyche’s starting XI, regular game-time doesn’t look like it will be arriving any time soon.

Indeed, the Czech international actually asked to leave Burnley this summer in search of regular football elsewhere, with Leeds United reportedly interested in obtaining his services, per Lancs Live. A deal was never completed, however, and he now faces the prospect of warming the bench until January at least if his involvement thus far is anything to go off.

Burnley fans, how disappointed have you been with Vydra since he joined the club? Let us know in the comments!
