Butland rejects Chelsea move

butland.jpgA fair few of us in the Football Transfer Tavern have been expecting a January move for Birmingham City goalkeeper Jack Butland, but sources at the Daily Mail have informed us that the young shot stopper has rejected the advances of a top Premier League club.

Chelsea reportedly launched a £3 million bid for the 19-year-old, which was accepted by Birmingham City.

The club gave young Butland permission to speak to the European champions, but whilst flattered by their interest, the keeper has opted to stay at St. Andrews.

With Petr Cech the undisputed number one at Stamford Bridge, and the highly rated Belgian keeper Thibaut Courtois on loan at Atletico Madrid, Butland clearly did not want to risk losing the opportunity of regular first team football.

He has been linked with a host of top clubs during this window, with it evident that Birmingham City need to sell to ease their financial worries.

Both Arsenal and Liverpool have preiously been linked with the keeper by, who came to everyones attention following a series of fine displays for Team GB at the London 2012 summer Olympics.

He also made his England debut this season in the friendly victory over Italy, and is viewed by many as the keeper most likely to give Joe Hart a fight for the England number one shirt in the future.

Did Chelsea really need Butland anyway? Let us know your thoughts below.
