It’s pretty clear that Chelsea have a bit of a problem in defence, and it’s an issue that the fans in the Transfer Tavern have been discussing all week long. Whilst Cesar Azpilicueta has impressed, as is the norm, the likes of Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Gary Cahill – who now finds himself out of the first team – have struggled. In the case of the latter, it’s a particular issue, given that he is already the wrong side of 30.
Cahill’s long-term future is something that clearly needs to be considered. He’s getting on in terms of his age, and his game has been gradually getting worse lately. As such, a replacement could be needed, and our landlord thinks that Chelsea would be wise to take a page out of Tottenham’s book – by scouting Jonathan Tah. According to the Mirror, the Lilywhites are looking at the German as a potential replacement for Toby Alderweireld.
A German international, Tah – who is rated at £22.5 million by Transfer Markt – has looked very good over in Germany for the last few years. At 22-years-old, he has cemented his place in the Bayer Leverkusen team, providing solid, consistent and effective defending for a team that has not always found it easy in the Bundesliga.
A powerful defender, he’s physically dominant at the back, whilst his towering 6ft3 frame makes him a real force from set pieces both defensively and offensively.
He’s not the most gifted player technically, but neither is Gary Cahill, and having defenders that are particularly efficient defensively has never been something that Chelsea have looked for. Just look at John Terry, for example.
Significantly, at just 22-years-old, he’d be a long-term solution for the Blues, and that’s something that they need to place more focus on. They’ve signed a number of older squad players in recent years, and they need to get out of that cycle.
This move could also offer Chelsea the chance to prevent a key rival from improving. Tottenham are on a roll at the moment, and if they improve their team anymore – as Tah certainly would – that could leave Chelsea chasing them.
Cahill has been a great servant to Chelsea, but it’s clearly time for the Blues to land a newer model. Tah would be the perfect fit, and Chelsea must beat Spurs to the punch on this one.
