There is no keeping Cesc Fabregas out of the headlines at the moment, either it is for running his mouth about lower league opposition and questioning the tactics of teams who don’t play with the Gunners ‘glorious style’, in recent days it has been the return of rabid transfer mongering.
As reported by yours truly yesterday it appeared that Chelsea were joining the Fabregas love in, but I stated that in my mind he would still only be seen in the red of Arsenal or the stripes of Barce. Now it appears that Real Madrid have upped their interest in the brilliant yet cocky catalan.
With rumours doing the rounds that Barcelona can not afford to bring back their ex-academy graduate, competitors are now smelling blood. Madrid aim to tempt Arsenal boss Wenger with a money plus player deal that could come to about £54million, the players suggested are 19 year old Spanish attacking midfielder Sergio Canales or 23 year old French striker Karim Benzema.
The temptation of Canales might not be too strong, a player with good potential, but plays in a position where Arsenal are not exactly short of numbers, Benzema on the other hand could be an option it is hard for Arsene to not consider.
Benzema is a player that Wenger has long since admired, after cutting his teeth at Lyon and creating a name for himself with an impressive scoring record of 43 goals in 112 league games, Benzema made the move to the Spanish capital. The young Frenchman was courted by Wenger in the past and even Sir Alex was interesting, but neither took the plunge. Upon moving to Madrid much was expected of the youngster, however he struggled to live upto his large reputation and has failed to become a prolific goalscorer at the Bernabeu.
Past interest in Benzema may tempt Wenger to sell and the huge sums of money could allow him to rebuild his team without their captain. If we ignore the question as to whether Fabregas would even accept the move, which deal would be best for Arsenal FC? Well the best case scenario would be creating a bidding war between the three clubs.
Barcelona would not really stand a chance in competing with Chelsea or Madrid financially but the emotional pull for Fabregas may convince Arsene to accept a lower bid. If it wasn’t to be the Catalans, the preferable destination for Arsenal would be Madrid to get him out of the Premiership, at Chelsea he would present a massive threat too their future title chances.
In purely financial terms Chelsea may offer more because of it being a cash only offer, but it could be better for Wenger to try and take a lower fee with a player involved and Karim Benzema would bring a lot to the Emirates. He could provide a focal point to their attacks, and his existing relationship with many of the current Arsenal squad would be hugely beneficial. If they are in a situation where they feel they have to sell, Madrid would be the best option in terms of the football club.
Replacing Fabregas 18 months ago would have been a much bigger proposition but with the emergence of young Jack Wilshere he is now marginally more replaceable than he has been before. Obviously it would be a massive loss but with that amount of money there will be various options open to the Frenchman.
I still cannot see the player moving anywhere other than Barcelona, and I also cannot see Arsenal forcing him out of the club, however if they were to do so I believe Madrid would probably be the destination that they would most like to ship him off too.
