Can Tito’s Catalan Giants Capture Agüero?

Reports coming out of Spain suggest that Sergio “Kun” Agüero could be on his way to Barcelona sometime in the near future. Spanish football rumours website has reported that Tito Vilanova may even want to sell David Villa and Alexis Sánchez to raise funds to sign Manchester City’s Argentinian striker.

With 30 goals and 12 assists in 48 games, Agüero was at the forefront of everything good about Manchester City last season. He also scored the all important last minute goal against Queens Park Rangers on the final day of the season, to snatch Premier League title glory from the grasp of their Manchester rivals.

Agüero has been linked with a move to Spain in the past but it was Real Madrid who looked like the most likely team to bid for the player in last summer’s transfer window. Now it seems Barcelona are the next big club to take an interest in the player who, at still only 24 years of age, has achieved so much and is recognised the world over as one of football’s current greatest players.

Roberto Mancini will undoubtedly be desperate to hold on to City’s star striker and so will the fans who voted him Manchester City’s Player of the Year in the 2011-12 season. However, The money aspect could end up being too much of a temptation for City bosses not to sell the striker. Agüero was bought at the start of the 2011-12 season for a rumoured fee of £35 million, his 2011-12 season was the best of his career so far (in relation to goals and assists) and is only in the second year of a five-year contract with the Blues.

Taking all this into account, Barca may need to make a bid of anywhere up to and over £50 million. That sum of money may prove too much for the Catalan giants of La Liga. On the other hand, if Vilanova does believe that selling Sánchez and Villa may be worth the capture of Agüero then the combined sales of the two Barcelona players may be enough to raise the funds needed to sign the Argentinian.

There are few players who could fill Agüero’s boots at the Etihad Stadium but I think most would be within City’s financial limits, especially with the extra funds gained from the sale of Agüero. Nevertheless, I think the fans would be devastated to see him leave and a poorly executed sale of the player in the January transfer window could really rock the boat at City.
