According to Italian outfit Calcio Mercato, West Ham are one of the clubs interested in a €10m swoop for Inter Milan midfielder Antonio Candreva.
The 31-year-old has fallen out of favour at the San Siro this season, featuring just seven times in the Serie A, and would surely want a move away.
Candreva is a very good player in his own right, but it is his versatility that makes him such a good signing for The Hammers this January. Manuel Pellegrini’s men currently have a number of injuries across the field with Jack Wilshere being very injury prone, and Manuel Lanzini and Andriy Yarmalenko nursing long-term injuries.
The problem with these three being injured is that they cover three different positions. Wilshere is primarily a central midfielder, Lanzini and attacking midfielder and Yarmalenko a winger. Unfortunately for The Irons, there is not really a player at the club that could suitably play all three of those positions. That is what makes Candreva such an alluring prospect, as he is so versatile.
The 54-cap Italy international is predominantly a winger, but can play and a central midfielder or even sit just behind the striker. There would surely be a place for him at West Ham, and given the spate of injuries that they have currently, he could be deployed in a number of positions.
A player like this is an absolute dream to a manager, and better still, he is one that brings a lot of experience to West Ham. The club look like they are building a good synthesis of old and young players, and this could be a very beneficial swoop at the end of the transfer window.
