Careful Levy: Tottenham should only make midfielder move if the price really is right

Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern are buzzing after Mauricio Pochettino committed his future to the club despite interest from Real Madrid following Zinedine Zidane’s departure.

Our regulars are eager to see who Pochettino will add to his Tottenham squad now his future is resolved. The Lilywhites secured another top-four finish in the Premier League, securing Champions League football at their new stadium next season. Owner Daniel Levy must back the Argentine in the transfer market if they want to push on and challenge for the title.

A winger is believed to be high on Pochettino’s shortlist with Wilfried Zaha being heavily linked with a move from Crystal Palace. The latest set of reports suggest that Tottenham will now turn their attention to Aston Villa winger – Jack Grealish. Following their failure to win promotion, the 22-year-old is set to depart.

Defeat in the playoff final means Villa are now in danger of not complying with financial fair play regulations which means they may be forced to sell players in order to balance the books. Grealish is seen as one of the most saleable assets and has attracted plenty of interest. While he is a very promising player, Tottenham should be looking at better options.

However, if they can land Grealish on the cheap, it would be a wise move to make. Villa are adamant that the Englishman will not leave for less than £40m, but Levy believes he can secure his signature for just £15m. Valued at £4.5m by Transfermarkt, he could be worth double that figure in a few years.

Primarily a number 10, he can also play on both wings. He netted three goals and notched eight assists in all competitions last season. If Spurs can sign him on the cheap, it’s a no-brainer. Otherwise, they should pursue other targets.
