Having been linked with Borussia Dortmund’s Neven Subotic for several weeks, it now seems Carlo Ancelotti has switched transfer targets, and will instead bid for the German champions’ second centre-back, Mats Hummels.
Formerly of Bayern Munich, Hummels has formed a formidable defensive partnership with Subotic this season, with the team conceding just 10 goals.
Chelsea are said to have already made contact with Dortmund over both players’ availability, yet they appear have settled on the lesser of the two.
This may be simply down to a matter of availability: with Arsenal one of many other clubs keeping tabs on Subotic, Chelsea may be tempted to move for Hummels, to be sure of getting their man without getting drawn into a bidding war. Having already been snubbed by Benfica’s David Luiz, the Stamford Bridge outfit can ill afford to miss out on another defender.
Ancelotti may also have been spurred into action by the rumours that Bayern Munich demanded a buy-back clause in Hummels’ contract when they sold him to Dortmund, and may move for the defender next summer following his impressive performances this season.
With a bid of £8m, Chelsea will hope to snap him up in January before Bayern can get their hands on him.Like what the TT have on offer? Sign up for more notifications!
