The Southampton fans were delighted in the Transfer Tavern on Thursday, after the club confirmed the signing of Guido Carrillo from Monaco.
Following 5 seasons of Premier League football in which Southampton have steered well clear of the bottom-three, The Saints now find themselves in the middle of a relegation fight with just 14 fixtures left to play. Mauricio Pellegrino has desperately struggled to find a winning formula for his Southampton side thus far this season, and the supporters are beginning to feel the fear of relegation.
However, their fears have been eased somewhat by the arrival of Carrillo from Monaco in a deal worth £19 million. Whether Carrillo will prove to be more prolific than the likes of Charlie Austin, Manolo Gabiadinni and Shane Long remains to be seen, but Pellegrino cannot rely on the Argentine alone to fire his side clear of the relegation zone this season.
Ideally, Southampton should be making additions to the spine of their team to ensure they have enough quality and depth within their squad to cope with the demands of the Premier League. With that being said, Pellegrino should attempt to sign Aden Flint from Bristol City this month to add solidity to his back-four.
Flint (valued at £1.8 million by Transfermarkt) has been an instrumental part of Bristol City’s success whilst chasing promotion to the top-flight this season, and the former non-league prospect also looked sturdy during Bristol City’s famous Carabao Cup run this season – particularly in their two-legged semi-final tie against Manchester City.
Based on his form this season, Flint is ready for the step up in class, so Pellegrino should do everything he can to lure the 28-year-old away from Bristol City this month and significantly bolster the quality of his defensive options.
