Over the years, Chelsea have had a bit of a knack for bringing in top quality midfielders. In recent seasons, they’ve had dozens of Europe’s best on their books, with the likes of Frank Lampard, Michael Essien and Michael Ballack all turning out in blue at one point or another.
This season, though, they’ve had markedly less success in this regard.
Tiemoue Bakayoko hasn’t had the desired impact in London as of yet, whilst Cesc Fabregas is past his best. N’Golo Kante has been sensational, but he deserves to be partnered with more consistent and effective players next season.
Chelsea, then, should look to bring in a new midfielder this summer, and our landlord thinks that Geoffrey Kondogbia, who is currently on loan at Valencia from Inter Milan, would be a fantastic choice.
Kondogbia is unique, at least in the context of the Chelsea midfield, in that he’s quite the jack of all trades. Fabregas’ main qualities lie going forward, whilst Kante’s are at the back. Kondogbia, meanwhile, is able to make an impact in both disciplines, and that’s what Chelsea have lacked this season – a player to bridge the gap.
Going forward, he’s an expert passer and dribbler and he’s also a willing runner, making him quite the threat.
Defensively, though, his solid frame and robust style makes him a real menace, which when combined with Kante, would make Chelsea a real midfield force. He’ll often look to pick the ball up from opponents and move it forward, which makes him a real threat in all aspects of the game.
At 25-years-old, he’s entering the best years of his career, and Chelsea would be wise to pounce for him. He’s proven his quality this term, and he’s undoubtedly worth a big investment.
