Cech is past it and Emery needs to axe veteran to bring the future to Arsenal right away

Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping for a prosperous future under new boss Unai Emery – our punters reckon the Spaniard will be a huge success following Arsene Wenger’s departure.

The ex-PSG boss arrives in North London with a reputation for lifting trophies. The 46-year-old won four titles during his time in France and also guided Sevilla to three consecutive Europa League titles. With Arsenal missing out on Champions League football, our punters are hoping he can replicate his success and guide the Gunners to their first European trophy.

Emery has a number of issues to deal with on his arrival at the club. Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere are yet to pen new contracts with the club, and a new goalkeeper should also be on his shortlist with Petr Cech approaching the end of his career.

A lack of Champions League football will hurt the Gunners in their search for a new number one. One man they should seriously consider is Toulouse youngster – Alban Lafont. Valued at £16.2m by Transfermarkt, the 19-year-old is one of Europe’s hottest prospects between the sticks and would be a fantastic long-term replacement for Cech. He made his debut at 16, becoming Ligue 1’s youngest ever goalkeeper; he kept 12 clean sheets for his side last season.

Keeping Cech at the club would be perfect for Lafont’s development. Under the tutelage of Emery alongside a Premier League veteran, he could develop into one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
