The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are desperate for their side to land a new goalkeeper. Petr Cech has been poor over the last few months, and at 35-years-old, he’s evidently past his best.
It’s time for the Gunners, then, to look to the future, and our landlord thinks that a move for Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno makes perfect sense. Indeed, the Gunners have even been linked with a potential move over the last week, with Bild reporting that discussions are underway regarding a move.
The 26-year-old has emerged as one of Europe’s more solid goalkeeping offerings, having been a regular in the Bundesliga over the last few years. He’s still young enough to be able to continue for the best part of a decade, but significantly, he also has several years of experience behind him – making him the perfect player to make the significant step up to the Premier League.
Standing at a towering 6ft2, Leno would provide a fantastic solution to Arsenal’s woes from set pieces, whilst his agility and mobility are two traits that differentiate him from Cech. Cech has, naturally, become less physically gifted with age, and that is beginning to cost the Gunners.
He’s a decent shot-stopper, and he’s quick enough off his line to prevent most major counterattacks. If Arsenal are going to compete at the highest level, they need to improve in their weakest areas, and there is no doubting that Leno would be a significant upgrade between the sticks.
Leno is rated at £12.6 million by Transfer Markt, and so he’d also likely represent decent value for the Gunners. He’s a perfect option for the present and the future. A move wouldn’t be easy, but as part of the rebuild following Wenger’s departure, Cech must be replaced.
