Southampton’s hopes of survival rest in their own hands as they hold a five-point advantage over Cardiff City in the fight for Premier League football next season. Ralph Hasenhuttl has rejuvenated his side following his arrival in December and the final few matches will show if he has done enough to keep them in the top-flight.
The manager made a number of changes to the squad he inherited from Mark Hughes and looked to make his mark on the side, however, it appears one of the players he sent packing in January could be returning to the St. Mary’s Stadium in the summer.
What’s the News?
According to Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness), Cedric Soares is to return to Southampton at the end of his loan spell with Inter Milan.
They claim the Serie A giants are looking at Manchester United’s Matteo Darmian as the man to solve their right-back issues and will not trigger the €11million (£9.5m) option to buy the Portugal international defender from the Saints permanently.
The news that Inter Milan are likely to send Soares back to the club will come as a blow to Southampton and Hasenhuttl as they would have hoped they could have pocketed around £9.5m for the defender.
The 27-year-old has clearly fallen down the pecking order since the arrival of the Austrian manager and the emergence of Yan Valery will not have helped his chances of getting back into the first-team when he returns.
Soares is still thought to have one year left on his current deal, which could leave the Saints with one more chance of obtaining a rather large fee for the player, however, it is unlikely anybody would be willing to match the hefty fee they could have received from the Italian giants.
But, for all the experience he has to offer and the energy he can bring to the side, it might just be worth Hasenhuttl casting another look at him in the summer if he does return, as he may be able to bring something to the side the young Valery may not quite be able to just yet.
Southampton fans, what do you make of Cedric’s likely return? Do you think he should get another chance, or do you think the Saints need to offload him? Join in with the discussion below by sharing your thoughts with us.
