It looks like we could be set for a cross-border transfer battle in the Football Transfer Tavern during the January transfer window after Mail Online reported that Celtic are ready to challenge Premier League sides West Ham United and Norwich City for Kilmarnock’s Liam Kelly.
Kelly has been one of the shining lights in the SPL this season and Neil Lennon will join a succession of English clubs in having scouts watch the 22-year-old during his game against Hearts on Boxing Day.
The Scottish international will become a free transfer during the summer and his club may look to sell him for a nominal fee during the upcoming window instead of losing him for nothing in six months time.
Kilmarnock Manager Kenny Shiels wants to start talks with Kelly over a new Kilmarnock contract, but it’s understood that the English-born midfielder wants to leave the SPL side next month
“I think Liam’s got some time to stay here and it’s important that he stays where he’s learning,” said Shiels last week.
“I think he’s due to sign a good contract as far as I know. We want him to stay in an environment that’s good for his improvement and the SPL’s certainly providing him with that.”
