The Celtic fans in the Transfer Tavern have been in fine spirits this week after securing the SPFL title against Rangers last weekend, and they are hoping their side will continue to improve this summer with a handful of new additions.
The domestic campaign has once again been a resounding success for Brendan Rodgers and his Celtic side, but they were forced to take a reality check in Europe as they crashed out at the group stage of the Champions League after registering just a single win. It would be grossly unjust to criticise Celtic for their European campaign as the odds were firmly stacked against them as soon as the draw was made.
Any club would struggle against the heavyweight pairing of Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich, but the supporters were still left frustrated by their side’s comparative inferiority. Our resident Bhoys are craving a European run next season and they are hoping Rodgers can complete the signing of at least one quality player to boost their chances.
Recent reports from The Times might just give the fans reason to believe that an ambitious deal could be concluded this summer, as Jose Mourinho is apparently willing to allow Daley Blind and Matteo Darmian to leave the club this summer. The former (valued at £18 million by Transfermarkt) has barely featured for United this season due to competition for places and Mourinho’s apparent lack of appreciation for his abilities, so his departure is hardly surprising.
Although Blind would certainly take some convincing to move to Celtic Park this summer, the club should be weighing up a potential move at the very least. Players of Blind’s quality, versatility and experience don’t become available for transfer all too often, and if Celtic want to progress beyond the group stages of the Champions League next season, he is exactly the type of player they should be targeting.
Blind is never going to light up the SPFL with dazzling dribbling, blistering pace or long-range strikes, but the play-making abilities he can provide along his wealth of experience would be a huge boost to everybody at the club. With the option to deploy Blind as a defensive midfielder, a centre back or a left-back, Rodgers would be foolish not to approach the Dutch international this summer and, considering he is willing to take a pay cut to leave Old Trafford, Celtic certainly have an outside chance of concluding a deal.
