Celtic should replace Patrick Roberts with £9m-rated Liverpool outcast this summer

The Celtic fans in the Transfer Tavern have been absolutely delighted with the impact of Patrick Roberts since he arrived at the club from Manchester City over 2 years ago.

Patrick Roberts has taken to life at Celtic Park like a duck to water since he arrived at the club in February 2016 and he has developed into a fine player in Scottish football. Unfortunately for both Roberts and the club, he has spent the majority of the season on the sideline through injury and, considering his loan deal is set to expire this summer, it could prove to be his final season with the Bhoys.

The resident Celtic supporters propping up our bar in the tavern will be gutted to see him go, but they appreciate the quality of his performances are bound to provoke interest from outside the club, and Pep Guardiola may even be willing to give him a chance on the Etihad based on the quality of Roberts’ form in Scotland.

If that is indeed the case, Brendan Rodgers will need to find a replacement for the 21-year-old this summer, and one man he should considering is Liverpool’s Lazar Markovic (valued at £9 million by Transfermarkt).

The 24-year-old’s stint at Liverpool has been far from a happy one and it seems he will be allowed to depart Anfield this summer for a cut-price. Markovic is a player who is low on confidence who needs a manager to put their faith in him and put his career back on the right path, and Brendan Rodgers could be just the man to bring the best out of the Serbian international.

Like Roberts, Markovic is a right-winger by trade, but he can also operate in a number ten role or on the left-wing. He has plenty to prove in European football after his unsuccessful spell with the Reds and although he would undoubtedly be a risky acquisition, the fact he will be available at a cheap price suggests it’s a risk worth taking in a bid to replace Roberts this summer.
