The Celtic fans who are gathered at the bar in The Transfer Tavern this evening are discussing reports that their manager has been told he would need to break the back to land his prime midfield target this summer.
According to reports in The Daily Record, Brendan Rodgers has been warned by Joe Allen’s agent that it will take a huge bid to bring the Welshman to Scotland this summer.
Rodgers is a keen admirer of Allen whom he managed at both Swansea and Liverpool during his tenure at both clubs but it is unlikely that Allen would be able to make the move North of the border due to his £45,000 a week wage, which is out of Celtic’s budget for a new signing.
When asked if Allen was set to join Rodgers at Celtic his agent Glenn Corcoran said:
“This is the first I have heard of this. Joe has a year left on his contract at Liverpool and nobody has spoken to us about extending that. The club have not spoken to us about selling him either.
“I haven’t given any thought whatsoever to it with regards to Celtic or any club. If Liverpool were willing to sell – and that is a big ‘if’ because I’ve not had that conversation with the club – they would ask for too much money for him.”
“I don’t know if Celtic at this moment would be willing to spend that sort of money and the wages would also be a massive issue.”
The Celtic fans in The Tavern are not concerned by the news that Allen will not be joining the club this summer as they believe their are more cost effective players out there that could do just as good a job as the Welshman.
