The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are eager for their side to shock the world against Barcelona on Tuesday night. Though the game is at Stamford Bridge, it’s fair to say that the Blues are the underdogs ahead of time – with the Spanish giants impressing in La Liga.
Clearly, the two teams are enjoying markedly different campaigns. Whilst Barcelona are running away with the league over in Spain, Chelsea are still not certain to secure a top-four finish – and so the game is a bit of a mismatch of sorts.
However, midfielder Cesc Fabregas knows all about Barcelona – owing to his time with the club prior to his Chelsea move – and he has been discussing the fixture with the official Chelsea website. In doing so, he has revealed how he plans to overcome them.
He said: “They are a team that try to put the first pressure very, very high, always working to have the ball, so if we can pass this first phase of their pressure, if we have the cool head to do that and not put ourselves under too much pressure, I think we can hurt them, because they will leave a lot of spaces at the back”.
Fabregas has clearly identified a weakness in the Barcelona team, and they’ll no doubt look to exploit that.
Certainly, Barcelona are famed for their high-press, fast-passing strategy, and whilst the Blues have looked to replicate that in the past, their system now is far more about rigidity and hard-work.
They’re pretty different, in terms of how they play, and as Fabregas says, if Chelsea can survive the initial onslaught, there could be an opening for the Blues.
It’s not going to be easy for Chelsea. Fabregas can identify their weaknesses all he wants, but it’s going to take something special for Chelsea to really beat them.
Nonetheless, it’s important to note that they aren’t the perfect team, and so there is hope for Conte.
They are famed for their high-line, and with Chelsea’s impressive pace going forward, there is certainly scope for the Blues to mount an offensive.
