Championship ace emerges as shock Tottenham target

deeney.jpgThe Independent suggest that Watford striker Troy Deeney is a shock target for Tottenham after some impressive showings for the Hornets in the Championship.

Andre Villas-Boas is searching for further depth in attack despite the arrival of record signing Roberto Soldado from Valencia with Jermain Defoe expected to follow Clint Dempsey – who joined the Seattle Sounders last week – out of North London.

This shortage leaves Emmanuel Adebayor, new signing Soldado as well as youngster Harry Kane as the only strike choices for manager Andre Villas-Boas, and would mirror the two forwards he has last year to chose from.

The Portuguese manager search for an alternative option striker has led to the Championship and Deeney, with the prolific striker valued at around £5 million by the Vicarage Road club.

Deeney missed the start of last season due to him serving a 10-month prison sentenced after being convicted of affray following a bar brawl in Birmingham. However he still finished the season with 20 goals as the Hornets eventually lost in the play-off final to Crystal Palace.

Deeney scored 20 goals last year even though he missed the opening month of the season after he was serving a 10-month prison sentence for his part in an attack outside a Birmingham nightclub in February of that year. Deeney served a third of the term before being released.

The 25-year-old signed for Watford from Walsall three years ago and he has recently agreed a new contract with the Championship side.

Watford have started this season as one of the favourites to be promoted, and Deeney has brought through his rich scoring form after he netted an impressive hat-trick in their 6-1 victory over Bournemouth this weekend.
