The Southampton fans in the Transfer Tavern were relieved to sneak past Fulham in the FA Cup Third Round because it finally showed a reversal in a dreadful run of form. Prior to the win against Fulham, you would have to go back to late November for the Saints’ last victory – a run of form which has seen them slide towards the bottom three in the Premier League.
Southampton need new faces this month to ensure they are not playing Championship football next season. One or two quality additions would surely keep them up.
James Maddison of Norwich City would be an ideal signing because he is both one for the future and also a player who would make an immediate difference for Southampton. The attacking midfielder has flair, class and the ability to score goals and create chances for his teammates.
The Coventry City academy product shone at The Ricoh Arena before switching to Norwich and – via a loan move to Aberdeen – he has established himself as one of the first names on the team sheet at Carrow Road. The 21-year-old has six goals and five assists from midfield this season, ranking him as one of the best performers in the second tier despite his young age.
With Norwich’s chances of promotion this season looking slim, Maddison will inevitably be a man in demand in the summer. Premier League clubs will be flocking around the young talent, offering him the chance of Premier League football.
Southampton should try to sign him now, when there is slightly less interest, in a bid to keep them up and secure the services of a potential future England international.
