‘Championship level at best’, ‘Bambi on ice’ – Newcastle fans on Twitter slate midfielder following Man City defeat

The Toon army were pleased to see some encouraging signs within their side’s performance against league-leaders Manchester City last night…

Rafa Benitez welcomed Pep Guardiola and his rampant Manchester City team to St James’ Park last night knowing his side would need an extraordinary performance to halt The Citizens winning run in the Premier League. For the majority of proceedings, Newcastle chose to make life difficult for City as they settled into a condense, deep-lying unit inside their final-third and hoped to produce a moment of magic on the counter-attack.

Considering the frightening form City are in at this moment in time, it is difficult to blame Benitez for adopting such a defensive approach, even if the tactics contributed to a relatively flat 90 minutes of football.

Newcastle’s Senegalese midfielder has struggled to cement his place in Benitez’s starting eleven so far this season, but he has begun to enjoy more first-team opportunities of late.
