The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern were delighted to see Nathaniel Clyne feature over the weekend. It was his first start of the season, having recovered from a long-term injury problem, and he has certainly been missed this term. His solid performance was an added bonus, too.
However, it appears as though Liverpool supporters don’t want to see Clyne, who is rated at £18 million by Transfer Markt, on the team sheet again this evening.
We recently ran a poll on the prospect of Clyne starting against the Citizens, and a whopping 71% of Liverpool fans voted against the idea, with just 29% of supporters keen to see the Englishman retain his place
Clyne looked good against Everton over the weekend, but it’s easy to see why fans are eager for him to drop back down to the bench tonight.
The Englishman has been out of action for much of 2018, and so despite getting minutes over weekend, he’s far from at match fitness. Not to mention, a Champions League quarter-final requires more than just satisfactory fitness given the demands of the tie, and so it will take the Englishman a while yet to regain his fitness.
You also must consider the fine form of Trent Alexander-Arnold. He was arguably one of Liverpool’s best players on a historic night of impressive performances last week, and so he certainly doesn’t deserve to lose his place.
Clyne will, no doubt, find his way back into the team soon, but tonight’s clash comes too early for the Anfield faithful, and it seems likely that it will come too soon for Jurgen Klopp, too.
