Charlie Nicholas: Arsenal should sell Lucas Torreira this summer

Just how exactly are Arsenal going to strengthen their squad this summer?

After missing out on Champions League qualification, according to BBC Sport, the north London club’s transfer budget could be as low as £40m.

Unai Emery may now be forced into selling players to generate the necessary funds, and one former Arsenal forward has a few names in mind — including a recent signing.

Let us take a look at his verdict in our latest instalment of the Pundit’s Choice feature.

“Who can they get out of the door? If you can get the right offer for Mesut Ozil you’d sell,” Charlie Nicholas told Sky Sports (via talkSPORT). “Mkhitaryan can go and you want to keep Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette,” he added.

“Torreira seems to be interested in going back to Italy. If you can get the right money: take it.”

After an impressive start to life at the Emirates which saw him praised by the likes of Gary Neville, Torreira’s form tailed off as the season progressed. Even so, Arsenal should think twice before selling the 23-year-old after just one season amid the interest from Napoli and AC Milan.

In his short time in north London, Torreira has still managed to add more of an aggressive streak to the Gunners’ midfield. His 1.9 tackles per game was the highest out of all of Arsenal’s midfielders (as per WhoScored).

In the end, it was clearly not enough. But the Uruguay international cannot be expected to put out every fire. With stronger team-mates around him, particularly in defence, he could help transform Arsenal into a much more solid outfit — or at least more solid than what they currently are now.

Whether that happens, given the exit rumours, remains to be seen. But one thing that is for sure is Torreira should not be the first name at the Emirates to be transfer listed this summer.
