Diego Forlan has revealed to The National that his former Manchester United team-mate and captain did not think much of Chelsea causing huge reaction here in the Transfer Tavern.
Indeed the Uruguayan claims that the Irishman called the Blues a small club. Forlan said of the discussion: “Chelsea are a small club, nothing like as big as Liverpool or Arsenal, my captain Roy Keane and other Manchester United players explained when I asked them about Chelsea.”
These comments would have come at a time when the Blues had not been bought by Roman Abramovich as their wait for the top flight title stretched towards fifty years.
Of course, once the Russian had come in and appointed Jose Mourinho, things changed, but Forlan was left in no doubt as to their status before that time.
The comments come ahead of the two sides facing off at Stamford Bridge this Sunday with the Blues just above the Red Devils but both are outside the top four.
It also marks the return of Jose Mourinho to Chelsea for the first time since his second sacking but our local Blues punters think he’ll receive a warm welcome.
“He’s a club legend and that can’t ever be forgotten.” Said one punter by the bar.
