Today’s copy of The Express has a story that has brought a smile to Chelsea supporters sat down in the Football Transfer Tavern.
The publication claim that the Blues will not let Juan Mata leave in January despite interest from French champions Paris Saint-Germain.
Following Jose Mourinho’s reluctance to play the Spanish midfielder regularly this term, his future has been up in the air with speculation in the tavern linking him with a move away from Stamford Bridge.
The 25-year-old has been selected behind tireless Brazilian midfielder Oscar in Mourinho’s first choice team as the former Real Madrid boss tries to adapt his style of play.
This possible availability saw a deadline day £30 million offer for PSG and sources close to the Ligue 1 champions suggest they will return with an improved bid in January.
However it appears that the Blues will not sell Mata in the next few months. A source reportedly told the Daily Express: “At the moment, Chelsea do not want to sell Mata, even if the offer is right.
“Mata and Brazilian starlet Oscar have been told by Mourinho that the No 10 spot is there to be grabbed by one of them.
“Whoever is playing best will keep the shirt. So far, Oscar, with his better tackling ability, strength and willingness to track back, has been the man Mourinho has favoured.”
Mata was the star of the show during the Blues’ comfortable 2-0 Capital One Cup victory over Arsenal this week, with his goal showing all the reasons why Mourinho should give the midfield mastero more of a regular first team berth.
Will Chelsea indeed rebuff any attempts from suitors to prise Mata away from West London this January? Let us know your thoughts below.
