Metro have an interesting story for Chelsea fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern as they note that a Blues utility man is keen on a spell away from the club next season.
After arriving from Barcelona, things have never really fallen into place for Oriol Romeu and now it seems that in order to gain some first team action next season, a loan spell might well be what is needed.
Given that Chelsea have a midfield that already boasts the likes of Ramires and David Luiz not to mention the old guard such as Frank Lampard and returning Jose Mourinho favourite, Michael Essien, the young player knows exactly how hard it would be to even make the squad next season.
Add to this the fact that Mourinho is keen to bring Xabi Alonso to Stamford Bridge – with the club having a good chance of doing so given Real Madrid’s decision to up their attempts to land Real Sociedad’s Asier Illarramendi – the future is looking even bleaker for Romeu.
The player’s close friend and Valencia midfielder Sergio Canales even claimed that: “I have spoken with Oriol and I say sincerely that he is very taken by the option of Valencia. The squad is perfect for a player to progress (in).”
Of course any move could well depend on the future of John Obi Mikel and also the success of bringing Benfica’s Nemanja Matic to the club.
