Metro have a pleasing claim for Chelsea fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern as they note that the club will keep hold of young left back Ryan Bertrand.
The defender has been linked with a move away from the club in recent weeks in search of first team football and Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers had reportedly been lining up a move to sign the player.
Now it seems that despite Ashley Cole signing a new deal and still being considered one of the best full backs in the world, Bertrand feels that he can break into the side and become Jose Mourinho’s first choice.
Cole has been one of the most consistent players in the Premier League during his time at the club and indeed when at Arsenal before that and is not one to miss out through injury or suspension. Despite all of this, the England international is now 32 and Bertrand noted that: “I see my future being Chelsea’s number one (left-back).
“I don’t concentrate on trying to dislodge him (Cole). I just focus on myself and my game and I’m sure that time will come.”
He further elaborated about life under Jose Mourinho, claiming that: “It’s definitely fulfilled the expectation. I was fortunate to experience it slightly when I first joined the club, when I was 15.
“I had a small taster of it, so I kind of knew what to expect.
“He’s just put his own twist on things, from the basics, right to the real intricate detail. He makes sure the ship’s pulling in one direction.
“We’re focusing on building a strong team bond and we want to go out to try to win everything we can.”
