Chelsea’s attacking midfielder Willian has been crowned Transfer Tavern readers’ ‘most pointless’ summer signing just beating Blues team-mate Samuel Eto’o by a single vote!
Despite the Brazilian scoring a sumptuous third and his first for Jose Mourinho’s side during the West Londoners’ recent victory over Norwich City, the majority of tavern readers believe his presence at Stamford Bridge was simply not required as we reached the climax of the summer transfer window.
We assume much has to do with the way Willian was transferred to Chelsea from Anzhi Makhachkala in controversial circumstances after the former Shakhtar Donetsk star actually passed a medical at London rivals Tottenham before switching to SW6.
In a dramatic change of heart, angering unsurprisingly bitter Spurs fans in the process, the Blues landed Willian for a whopping £30 million despite already boasting Juan Mata, Oscar, Eden Hazard, Andre Schurrle, Frank Lampard, Kevin De Bruyne and at that time, Victor Moses in their ranks who could all play in the attacking midfield positions.
In a clear case of Jose Mourinho egotistically trumping old foe Andre Villas-Boas for his wants and not his needs, Willian was secured and has now in light of their overstocked midfield riches, he has been crowned the ‘most pointless’ summer signing, receiving 26% of readers’ votes.
With Eto’o also receiving 26% of readers’ votes losing out by a solitary nomination, the rest of the poll was made up of Manchester City’s Stevan Jovetic who finished in third with 14%, West Ham United’s Andy Carroll with 10%, Liverpool’s Iago Aspas with 8%, Arsenal’s Emiliano Viviano with 6%, Manchester City’s Martin Demichelis with 5%, West Bromwich Albion’s Diego Lugano with 3% and Everton’s Gerard Deulofeu with 2%
