There are big claims in the Football Transfer Tavern today that West Ham United manager Sam Allardyce has set his sights on making Chelsea striker Demba Ba his sixth summer signing according to the Daily Star.
The Hammers yesterday landed the £5 million signing of Liverpool winger Stewart Downing to go alongside the £16 million club record purchase of Andy Carroll from Anfield earlier this summer.
And Allardyce has now prioritised bringing another striker to the club with the Senegal star back on his radar for a season-long loan deal with the club that finished 10th in the Premier League last season.
Ba has already spent time at Upton Park on his introduction to the Premier League, where he hit seven goals in 12 Premier League games for the struggling Hammers during his half-season spell in 2011 but was unable to keep them in the top flight.
The 28-year-old only made the move to Stamford Bridge from Newcastle United in January in a three-and-a-half year deal but he could find himself down the pecking order in Jose Mourinho’s side if the former Real Madrid manages to recruit one of his top summer targets.
Manchester United star Wayne Rooney and unwanted Anzhi Makhachkala striker Samuel Eto’o are high on his wanted list and that could see Ba playing a role from the bench for the next season.
Allardyce could take advantage of the situation by offering Ba regular football as a partner for Carroll although they will have to successfully trim the wage bill at Upton Park first.
Could Demba Ba be returning to Upton Park? Surely West Ham need further striking reinforcements. Let us know your thoughts below.
