When Chelsea signed Oriel Romeu last summer I’ll be honest I’d never heard of him. I was pleasently surprised when I saw him play and if not for his injury he would have played a big part last season.
Roman Abramovich obviously thought the move work also as Chelsea now look to sign Romeu’s former Barcelona B team-mate Sergi Roberto.
Roberto, 20 is capped by Spain’s U-21 national team and made 2 appearances for Barcelona’s first team last season.
Roberto was a target for former Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas and despite his sacking remains of Chelsea’s radar. It seems all Chelsea’s transfer targets i.e Hulk, Falcao, Roberto etc. were a target for AVB which begs the question, does any Chelsea manager really have a shortlist or does Abramovich decide who comes in and out? But that’s another article entirely.
As far as Roberto goes I don’t see this rumour being to far-fetched as Abramovich’s desire to bring in young talent is well documented and lets be honest if you play for Barcelona 1st team or B team you have talent.
As far as it being a good deal I feel it would be worth a shout. Barcelona will agree to sell as long as they get a buy-back clause and provided the fee isn’t too high then I see this as a good move. The only problem I see is a move for Roberto once again limits the opportunities for Josh McEachran who surely deserves a shot to prove whether he is a good as we think he is.
