Romelu Lukaku is a man in-demand this summer, and there isn’t a single fan in the Transfer Tavern that doesn’t want to see the Belgian lead the line for their side…
However, it seems as though any club that looks to seal a deal for the forward will have to pay big money – with the Times reporting that the Toffees have placed a whopping £100 million price tag on the Belgian, with Ronald Koeman seemingly desperate to keep hold of his star striker. Interestingly, it is noted that both Man Utd and Chelsea are expected to make their move, with Everton preparing for what is beginning to look like an inevitable approach from the Premier League outfits.
Though many fans in the pub want to see Lukaku sign, particularly the Chelsea fans, this report has certainly made them reconsider their opinions. £100 million is a lot of money, and would represent a record fee, and whilst Lukaku is certainly a top player, it would undoubtedly be a huge risk.
Of course, the Belgian struggled to adapt when he was last at Chelsea, with question marks being raised over his suitability at the highest level. His goalscoring record over the last couple of years would, in theory, put those fears to bed, but for £100 million, both Man Utd and Chelsea are going to want a player that they can absolutely rely upon.
Our landlord thinks that it would be wise for Chelsea and Man Utd to consider their next moves very carefully, as he fears that Lukaku could buckle under the pressure of a record fee. There can be no guarantees that he will adjust to life at a top Premier League side, and so a fee closer to the £50 or £60 million mark could represent far better value with less risk.
