The Daily Mirror is reporting that Chelsea are interested in signing 25-year-old Sampdoria striker Giampaolo Pazzini for a fee in the region of £22million. The Italian international is a powerful striker with a good goals record and the deal that is discussed would see the player loaned back to Sampdoria for the remainder of the season.
Pazzini has been in fine form this season and his partnership with Antonio Cassano is one of the most potent in Italy; they have even drawn comparisons with the former Sampdoria strike duo of Gianluca Vialli and Roberto Mancini.
Chelsea are short of options in attack as both Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou are away at the African Cup of Nations and Nicolas Anelka is struggling with an injury. This leaves youngsters Daniel Sturridge and Fabio Borini as Ancelotti’s only recognised frontmen but the Italian is thought to be happy with his current squad. Pazzini would not arrive at the club until the summer but his imminent arrival would certainly increase the pressure on the current crop of strikers to perform well.
Much has been made of Carlo Ancelotti’s claim that if any new players arrive at Chelsea he will streak through the training ground, but it is widely known that Chelsea are in the market for a striker and Pazzini is certainly on their radar. The fact that he will be loaned back to Sampdoria will ensure that Ancelotti’s modesty may be saved. Chelsea delegation is thought to be arriving on Wednesday to begin talks over the big-money move.
