Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger could feature for the Blues against Wolves after the international break, according to football.london.
The Germany international is yet to feature for new manager Frank Lampard after picking up a knee injury at the end of last season, but is expected to return against the West Midlands outfit on 14 September.
The 26-year-old has played 180 minutes for Chelsea’s development squad against Tottenham and Liverpool in recent weeks, as he looks to break back into the first-team fold at Stamford Bridge.
Rudiger’s potential return will be welcomed by the Blues, who are yet to see their side keep a clean sheet this season. The west Londoners shipped four goals without return during their season opener against Manchester United at the start of August, before drawing 1-1 with Leicester City on home soil.
They then narrowly beat newcomers Norwich 3-2 away from home, before being undone late-on by Sheffield United last weekend, drawing 2-2 with the Blades thanks to a last minute own goal from Kurt Zouma.
Going forward, the Blues are showing signs of promise, with Tammy Abraham finding form before the international break. The 21-year-old now has four goals to show for his efforts, and will be looking to continue with his impressive goalscoring streak at Molineux.
Defensively, however, it is clear that Chelsea need to tighten things up. Zouma and Andreas Christensen have up until this point looked far from assured in the heart of the back-line, evident from the goals that they are conceding, making the anticipated return of Rudiger even more crucial.
Having a player of Rudiger’s pedigree return to the fold will be a huge boost for Chelsea, especially considering how poor they’ve been at the back so far this season.
Indeed, after the Blues’ opening day defeat to Manchester United, the Daily Mail reported that Chelsea were going to fast-track the 26-year-old’s recovery to stabilise their defence, proving just how important he is to the west London outfit.
