The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are desperate for their side to secure a bit more depth…
The Blues’ first team squad was small last season, but Antonio Conte got away with it because Chelsea weren’t in the Champions League. Next season, that won’t be the case, and when you consider that several players have already left the club – Nathan Ake and Nathaniel Chalobah to name just two – things are beginning to look desperate for the Blues.
Unfortunately for Conte, though, it doesn’t look as though his quest to secure more squad depth is going to be easy – with Gianluca Di Marzio reporting that Chelsea’s interest in Real Madrid defender Danilo is concrete, but Man City are also firmly in the race for the defender. It is reportedly Chelsea that are the first team to make a bid, though.
It is tough to guess whether Danilo would be a starter at Stamford Bridge, given that Victor Moses was very impressive in a blue shirt last season. Danilo is clearly a natural fit in the role, and on his day he is unstoppable – but that doesn’t mean that he would walk into the Chelsea first team.
Rather, if nothing else, he would serve as a piece of squad depth for Conte – and that is worth paying big money for.
Pep Guardiola, though, has the advantage of a club willing to back him with huge funds this summer, and so the Citizens may be able to outmuscle Chelsea should they make a bid. The Blues, meanwhile, have been hesitant to spend big so far this summer.
Our landlord is expecting this one to turn into a bit of a saga.
