Whilst much of the talk in the Transfer Tavern has been about Chelsea’s striking situation, our landlord is far more concerned with how the Blues are going to deal with the impending departure of John Terry…
The English veteran is set to leave the club this summer in search of pastures new, and Antonio Conte has a big job on his hands as he looks to try and replace him.
Several names have been passed around Transfer Tavern over the last few days in that regard, but according to the Daily Mail, Chelsea could yet look to pounce on Liverpool’s mistake by looking towards Virgil van Dijk. Now, it is noted that the Blues are yet to make contact, and indeed Southampton are said to have no interest in selling, but Chelsea reportedly remain keen on the defender – so anything could happen over the coming months.
Antonio Conte would certainly be wise to make a move for the 25-year-old, given his fine form in the Premier League. A real leader at the back, van Dijk was the star of the show for Southampton prior to an injury blow last season, and his arrival would certainly help plug the hole left behind by John Terry.
That being said, Chelsea’s defensive situation remains very unclear at present. Andreas Christensen is set to return from a loan, whilst Nathan Ake is also pushing for more of a significant role. Indeed, whilst Terry may be leaving, that duo would give Chelsea two more names at the back – leaving our landlord questioning whether a new defender is even necessary…
