Chelsea: Blues tracking progress of Mykola Shaparenko

Chelsea have been keeping tabs on Dynamo Kiev’s Mykola Shaparenko, according to a report by Caught Offside.

They claim the Blues have been tracking the youngster’s progress in recent months after witnessing the 20-year-old put in some impressive performances.

However, Chelsea are not the only Premier League powerhouses said to hold an interest in the Ukraine international, with the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United, as well as West Ham United all keen on Shaparenko.

Chelsea will have had first-hand experience of watching Shaparenko in action up close and personal as he played every minute in both games against the Blues on their way to lifting the Europa League title last season.

The 20-year-old has earned glowing reviews for his performances already within his short career, with FutbolGrad writing an article on him in November 2018 describing him as the ‘Diamond of Dynamo’.

An attacking midfielder, his stats were rather respectable in front of goal as according to Transfermarkt, Shaparenko managed to record eight goals and three assists in his 33 matches across all competitions last season.

FutbolGrad also noted how well he had improved by listing statistical data regarding his displays, as he had become more willing to take on a shot at goal and become a more dangerous threat. He went from 2.3 to 3.32 shots per game with 57.7% of those shots on target. He is also comfortable on the ball, as he had averaged 4.75 dribbles per game this season of which he completed 61.7% at the time of writing.

However, with the likes of Mason Mount looking to establish himself in Frank Lampard’s first-team after signing a new deal, it could be tough to see Shaparenko making a name for himself at Stamford Bridge. The England Under-21 international managed 2.9 shots per game with 0.9 of them on target, whilst his passing percentage stood at 76.6 in England’s Championship (WhoScored), a league that is, arguably, of a better standard of football than Ukraine’s top-flight.

The 20-year-old certainly appears to have a bright future ahead of him, however, there will be doubts about whether it will be at Stamford Bridge.

With the transfer ban currently hanging over the club like a dark cloud, Chelsea will know that they cannot do anything in regards to their interest in Shaparenko for at least a year.

Whether he will still be available in 12 months remains to be seen considering the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United and West Ham United are all thought to be interested in the attacking midfielder.
